App interface

A map of the window: what each part is called, what it does, and where the detailed page for it lives.

Version rail Beside the document Version snapshots, Git commits, change highlights

App bar

The strip along the top edge of the window. On the left, the logo and three icon buttons switch the whole window between Local files, the Cloud workspace and Sync (see Local, Cloud and Sync views). On the right, sign-in for the cloud. Nothing here is needed to edit local files.

Sidebar

Your tracked folders as expandable trees, a "Last changed" list, and search. Its own page: Sidebar and folders. The first button in the document header opens and closes it.

Document header

The row of controls directly above the document, from left to right:

  • Sidebar toggle and Focus mode (see below).
  • Back and Forward through recently opened documents (⌘[ and ⌘]). Clicking a heading link inside the current document counts as a step too: Back returns to where you were reading before the jump, then a second Back leaves the document.
  • Breadcrumb with the file's path inside its tracked folder; on a narrow window it collapses and shows the full path on hover.
  • Save status: Saved, Saving, Unsaved, or File Missing with recovery actions (see When a file goes missing).
  • Edit mode toggle, the pencil that switches between reading and editing.
  • Search in document opens the find bar (Find in document).
  • Copy content offers the document as Rich Text, Markdown or LinkedIn-ready text.
  • Share to the cloud (Share to cloud), Copy file path, Move to Trash, and Download with the export formats (Export).

Toolbar

Formatting buttons for headings, inline styles, lists, code blocks and links. It appears only in editing mode, stays visible while you scroll, and a chevron collapses it; that choice persists. Details: Formatting and the toolbar.

Frontmatter block

A collapsible section above the title that shows and edits the file's YAML front matter whenever the file has one. Details: Frontmatter.

Version rail

A panel beside the document with the file's history: local version snapshots, or the Git commit history when the file lives in a repository, and highlights of what changed. A chevron button shows and hides it. Details: Versions and Git history and View last changes.

Modes

Reading mode

Every document opens read-only. The Markdown is rendered, the toolbar is hidden, and you can search the document. Selecting text with the mouse copies it to the clipboard immediately and shows a "copied N chars" confirmation; this is always on and not configurable. Opening a file to read it never writes to it.

Editing mode

Reach it with the pencil in the document header, File → Edit File, or by clicking into the text and choosing the Edit pill that appears at the pointer. The toolbar appears and the document saves automatically as you type, or immediately with ⌘S. Details: Reading and editing.

Focus mode

The second button in the document header strips the window down to the document:

  • The app bar disappears; a small raven logo in the document header marks where it was.
  • The toolbar is hidden even while editing.
  • On a window at least 1280 px wide the version rail closes as well.

Leaving focus mode brings back the app bar and restores the toolbar and the version rail to the state they were in before you entered it. Focus mode is remembered across app restarts. There is no keyboard shortcut for it.

Wide layout

The icon button in the document header, right after the pencil, switches the document between the centred column and the full width of the pane, leaving only the normal side margin. It stays in the header, so it's always visible, even after you scroll down the document. The setting is global — one choice for every document rather than one per file — and it's remembered across app restarts, in the desktop app and the cloud workspace alike. On a narrow (mobile-width) window the button isn't shown at all, since wide layout makes no difference there. There is no keyboard shortcut for it.

The app seems stuck. This can happen after an update. Clearing the cache should fix it.
