Export to PDF, Word and Markdown
Turn any document into a file people without Context Raven can open, or take with you outside the app.
How to reach it
Top bar → Download menu → Markdown, PDF, or Word.
Filename and location
Every export is named {title}-{YYYY-MM-DD}.{ext}. On the desktop app, the system's native save dialog
opens, defaulting to your Downloads folder, so you choose exactly where the file lands. The write
is atomic: the file is staged and only renamed into place once it's complete, so a failed export
never leaves a half-written file behind, and you see the real error from the OS if one occurs.
A4, portrait. Fonts are bundled inside the app, so the layout doesn't depend on what's installed on whatever machine opens the PDF. The title is set 24pt bold, followed by the export date, with a "Page X of Y" footer on every page. The text is real, selectable text, not a picture of text.
Word
The .docx file opens in Word, Google Docs, and LibreOffice. The title uses Word's built-in
"Title" style, so the document keeps a real, navigable outline.
What survives the export, and what changes
| Kept | Changed or omitted |
|---|---|
| Headings, paragraphs, bold, italic, strikethrough, inline code | Frontmatter (stripped entirely) |
| All list types including task checkboxes; blockquotes | Footnotes (collected into a list at the end, not inline) |
| Tables, with their alignment and column widths | Math (exported as its raw source text, not typeset) |
Links (clickable only for http(s):// and mailto:) | HTML comments (omitted); raw HTML blocks (kept as source text) |
| Images, and Mermaid diagrams rendered to a picture | Bold wins where text is both bold and italic |
| Common emoji (become bracketed text in PDF, stay as emoji in Word) | |
| Animated images (only the first frame exports) |
A failed image is replaced by [image: alt text]; the rest of the export still completes.
Remote images
Export is the one moment Context Raven fetches something over the network on your behalf: a remote image the document links to is downloaded, with a 10-second timeout, so it can appear in the exported file. This only happens when you click one of the Download options; the editor itself never loads a remote image while you're reading or writing. See What the app never does.
