Formatting and the toolbar
While you're editing, a formatting toolbar sits above the document for every block and inline style Context Raven supports.
How to reach it
The toolbar appears automatically when you enter editing mode. It's sticky — it stays visible as you scroll — and collapsible: a chevron button hides it, and your choice persists across documents and app restarts.
What's on it
- Headings H1–H3 (H4–H6 are supported in the document itself, but not as separate toolbar
buttons — type
####,#####, or######at the start of a line instead). - Bold, italic, strikethrough, inline code.
- Bullet list, numbered list, task list, blockquote, horizontal rule.
- Code block, with a language picker for syntax highlighting.
- Link, which opens a link dialog.
Bullet and numbered lists nest, and an empty bullet survives a save instead of being cleaned up.
Task lists nest too (Tab indents a task under the one above it, Shift-Tab undoes that); see
Reading and editing for which nested checkboxes toggle with a
single click in reading mode. Blockquotes nest too — each level of nesting draws its own bar. A
horizontal rule is written back to the file as ---.
Keyboard shortcuts
| Shortcut | Formatting |
|---|---|
| ⌘B | Bold |
| ⌘I | Italic |
| ⌘⇧X | Strikethrough |
| ⌘E | Inline code |
⌘⇧X is Context Raven's own binding for strikethrough, chosen because ⌘⇧S is already Save As….
Links
Click the link button, or select text first and then click it, to open the link dialog: enter the URL and, if you didn't select text, the display text. Editing an existing link works the same way — click into it and use the same button.
Only http://, https://, and mailto: links are clickable once you're back in reading mode or
in an export; other link forms are stored but not clickable there.
Code blocks
A code block gets its own language picker in the toolbar. Setting a language enables syntax highlighting for that block in both editing and reading mode, and carries through to exports.
Limits
- The toolbar is hidden entirely on windows narrower than 768 px; formatting still works through Markdown syntax and keyboard shortcuts at that width.
- Strikethrough only recognizes the
~~text~~form.
